چکیده

By using violet backgrounds we selectively altered blue-cone sensitivity but found no change in flicker photometric sensitivity. This indicates that blue cones do not contribute to luminance as defined by flicker photometry.

Spectral and spatial selectivity of luminance vision in reef fish

Luminance vision has high spatial resolution and is used for form vision and texture discrimination. In humans, birds and bees luminance channel is spectrally selective-it depends on the signals of the long-wavelength sensitive photoreceptors (bees) or on the sum of long- and middle-wavelength sensitive cones (humans), but not on the signal of the short-wavelength sensitive (blue) photoreceptor...

Equiluminance: spatial and temporal factors and the contribution of blue-sensitive cones.

Equiluminance ratios for red/green, red/blue and green/blue sine-wave gratings were determined by using a minimum-motion heterochromatic matching technique that permitted reliable settings at temporal frequencies as low as 0.5 Hz. The red/green equiluminance ratio was influenced by temporal but not spatial frequency, the green/blue ratio was influenced by spatial but not temporal frequency, and...

Why hearts flutter: Distorted dim motions.

When a display of red spots or hearts on a blue surround is moved around under dim light, the spots appear to wobble or flutter relative to the surround (the "fluttering hearts" effect). We explain this as follows: Rods and cones both respond to the hearts. Rods are more sluggish than cones, with a latency of ∼50 ms, and they are also much more sensitive to blue than to red (the Purkinje shift;...

Blue-Black or White-Gold? Early Stage Processing and the Color of 'The Dress'

PURPOSE In Feb 2015 an image of a dress posted on Tumblr triggered an internet phenomenon: Is the Dress blue and black (BB) or white and gold (WG)? Many claim BB and others insist WG while the true colors are BB. The prevailing theory is that assumptions about the illuminant govern perception of the Dress with WG due to bluish lighting and BB due to yellowish. Our purpose was to determine if ea...

Faster than the eye can see: blue cones respond to rapid flicker.

Flickering lights that are detected by the blue cones of the human visual system fuse to yield a steady sensation at much lower rates of flicker than do lights that are detected by the red or green cones. Yet, although blue-cone-detected lights flickering at 30-40 Hz appear to be steady, they are still able to interact with red- or green-cone-detected flickering lights to produce clearly detect...
